Music Director

We're proud to announce that Jennifer Brauer will be joining the Lutheran Westland team and filling the role of Music Director.  This is Jennifer’s second year with the LHSA.  She began at Lutheran Northwest last year as choir director, a role she will continue this year in addition to her ministry at Lutheran Westland.  Previously, she spent 18 years at the Lutheran High School of Saint Charles County which is in a suburb of St. Louis, MO.

Jennifer is a native of Detroit, Michigan and an alumna of Lutheran Westland (1994). She graduated from Concordia University Ann Arbor in 1999, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education with majors in Music and Mathematics.  She completed advanced degrees in Music Education at the University of Missouri St. Louis in 2007 and in Vocal Performance at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in 2016.  She is member of Ascension of Christ Lutheran Church.

  1. What’s your role at Lutheran Westland?

    Music Director

  2. Where are you from?

    Detroit, MI – Lutheran Westland Alumna Class of 1994

  3. When did you know that you wanted to be in the Lutheran high school environment and what led you to pursue that path?

    I decided on this path as a senior at Lutheran Westland where my experiences as student led me to pursue this path. It also took the encouragement of two teachers, Kurt von Kampen and Jim Aumann.

  4. What’s your favorite Bible verse?

    Romans 1:16 – I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes…

  5. What are three words to best describe you?

    Hard-Working, Passionate, Genuine

  6. What was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?

    I worked at a Dairy Queen for 7 years…

  7. Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?

    I am an organizational wizard. I love to organize.

  8. If you could choose a superpower, what would it be?

    I don’t want a superpower, I just want Hermione’s time turner from the Harry Potter books.

  9. What’s your favorite food?

    Ice Cream

  10. What’s your least favorite food?

    Tomatoes

  11. What’s your favorite place that you’ve traveled and why?

    Ludwigsberg, Germany because I got to meet my favorite singer Cecilia Bartoli

  12. Where would you like to travel next and why?

    Scotland because I’m fascinated with the Outlander book series.

  13. What’s a fun fact about you many people may not know?

    I was on the first ever Women’s Soccer team at Concordia Ann Arbor.

  14. What’s one hobby you’d like to get into?

    I’ve always wanted to learn kick boxing.

  15. What’s your favorite sport to watch and which team do you root for?

    I am a huge hockey fan and I watch at least a part of every Stanley Cup playoff game. I live and die with the Detroit Red Wings, so lately there’s been a lot of dying.

  16. Are you an early bird or a night owl?

    Years of teaching has made me an early bird although I would prefer to be a night owl.

  17. Are you a dog person or a cat person (neither or both)?

    Cat person, I have three: Bill, Zeke, and Vinnie

  18. What’s one of your favorite memories from the past year?

    I attended the home opener for the Red Wings. It was awesome and they won!

  19. What’s the best advice you were ever given? Who was it from?

    You are what you continually do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act but a habit – Dr. Jim Henry by way of Aristotle

  20. Is there any advice you’d offer to current and future Lutheran Westland students?

    Take music. It’s scientifically proven that four years of participation in a performance ensemble will improve your ACT score by four points.
